Understanding the Mechanisms Behind Emotional Difficulties in Autistic Adults
Many adults on the Autistic Spectrum experience internal emotional difficulties, such as anxiety and depression. While this link is recognized, the exact mechanisms underlying it, especially in adults, are not always clear. New research aimed to deepen this understanding, focusing on two key psychological characteristics.
The study, published in BMC Psychiatry on June 6, 2026, examined the role of 'Intolerance of Uncertainty' (IU) and 'Negative Problem Orientation' (NPO). Intolerance of Uncertainty describes a person's difficulty accepting ambiguous or unpredictable situations, while Negative Problem Orientation reflects how a person perceives their ability - or inability - to effectively solve everyday problems in daily life.
The researchers recruited a large sample of adults and examined the relationship between autistic traits, ADHD traits, internalizing difficulties (anxiety and depression), intolerance of uncertainty, and negative problem orientation. Using advanced statistical analyses, they investigated whether these two factors explained the link between neurodevelopmental traits and internalizing difficulties.
Findings and Their Significance
The study findings report that intolerance of uncertainty and negative problem orientation fully explained the link between autistic traits and internalizing difficulties such as anxiety and depression. This means that the difficulty in coping with uncertainty, combined with a negative perception of problem-solving ability, appears to be the main factors through which autistic traits contribute to the development of these emotional difficulties. This finding remained significant even after the researchers accounted for additional factors such as ADHD traits, age, gender, and education level of the participants.
It is important to note that in people with ADHD traits, these factors explained only part of the link to internalizing difficulties, suggesting that additional factors, not examined in this study, may be involved in this relationship.
Implications for the Autistic Community in Israel
These findings can be significant for autistic adults in Israel. A better understanding of the psychological mechanisms contributing to anxiety and depression can help in developing more targeted support and coping strategies. For example, interventions aimed at improving tolerance of uncertainty and strengthening self-efficacy in problem-solving may alleviate internal emotional difficulties in autistic adults.
It is important to remember that this is one study, and the conclusions may point to future research directions and initial understandings. Nevertheless, it provides an important conceptual framework for understanding the link between autistic traits and internalizing difficulties, and how worldview and coping with uncertainty may play a central role in emotional experience.
